The Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN), National Ear Care Centre Kaduna Chapter, commemorated the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with an awareness programme at the Nigeria Police College, Kaduna.
Observed annually on 26 June, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations initiative aimed at strengthening global action and cooperation toward a world free of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The 2026 theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” highlights the need for innovative, evidence-based approaches to addressing the evolving nature of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
The event, held on Friday, 26 June 2026, brought together police officers, cadets, and pharmacists to discuss the growing challenge of drug abuse and the critical role of law enforcement in prevention, intervention, and community engagement.
Speaking during the programme, pharmacists from the National Ear Care Centre Kaduna Chapter delivered presentations on the impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and society. They highlighted emerging trends in substance use, the dangers posed by synthetic drugs, and the importance of strengthening preventive measures at both community and institutional levels.
A major focus of the discussion was the role of law enforcement officers beyond conventional policing. Participants were encouraged to view drug dependence as a challenge that often requires rehabilitation and support alongside enforcement measures. The presenters emphasized that directing affected individuals to appropriate treatment and rehabilitation services can contribute significantly to reducing recidivism and promoting safer communities.
The programme also explored the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals and security agencies in addressing drug-related challenges. Through interactive discussions, participants examined strategies for community engagement, early intervention, and public awareness as effective tools for preventing substance abuse.
Among the dignitaries present were the Commandant of the Police College Kaduna, A.I.G. Dan Sabo Idris, psc (+); the Deputy Commandant, C.P. Tabitha Bako; senior police officers; police cadets; the Head of Department of the National Ear Care Centre; the Patron of AHAPN; and staff pharmacists.
As part of the event, the Association honoured A.I.G. Dan Sabo Idris and C.P. Tabitha Bako with Awards of Appreciation in recognition of their leadership, partnership, and support in advancing awareness and preventive efforts against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The awards also acknowledged their commitment to strengthening collaboration between the Police College and healthcare professionals in promoting innovative responses to the world drug problem.
The event concluded with a renewed call for collective action against drug abuse. Participants reaffirmed the need for sustained awareness campaigns, stronger partnerships, and continued engagement with young people to address the root causes of substance abuse and build healthier communities.
The commemoration served as a reminder that tackling drug abuse is a shared responsibility, with healthcare professionals, law enforcement agencies, families, schools, and communities all playing vital roles in creating a safer and drug-free society.
