ABUTH Pharmacy Department Trains Preceptors on Ethics, Mentorship and Professional Role Modelling
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services, ABUTH, Shika–Zaria, has held a workshop for pharmacy preceptors, focusing on ethics, mentorship and the responsibility of experienced pharmacists in developing competent future practitioners.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika–Zaria, has organised a departmental workshop for pharmacy preceptors, focusing on the role of mentorship and professional ethics in preparing pharmacy trainees for practice.
The workshop, themed “Ethics and Mentorship in Pharmacy Practice: The Preceptor as a Professional Role Model,” was facilitated by Prof. Y. E. Apeji, Professor of Pharmaceutics in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The session examined the responsibilities of pharmacy preceptors beyond technical supervision, highlighting their influence on trainees’ professional competence, ethical conduct and career development.
Discussions emphasised the importance of professionalism, exemplary leadership, effective mentorship and creating an environment that encourages excellence in pharmacy practice.
The workshop brought together pharmacists across different levels of seniority, including Consultant Pharmacists, Deputy Directors, Chief Pharmacists, Principal Pharmacists and Senior Pharmacists.
Their participation provided an opportunity for professional exchange and discussion on approaches to strengthening mentorship within the practice environment.
Preceptors play an important role in translating formal pharmacy education into practical professional experience. Through their daily interactions with trainees, they can influence how students and early-career pharmacists understand professional responsibilities, patient care and ethical decision-making.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services expressed appreciation to Prof. Apeji for his presentation and contributions towards strengthening mentorship and professional development within the pharmacy profession.
