100 Years of Pharmacy: PSN Looks Ahead to Its 2027 Centenary
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria is preparing to mark 100 years since its founding in 1927, with President Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim outlining plans for a major centenary programme in 2027.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is preparing for a major milestone in 2027 as the professional body approaches 100 years since its founding in 1927.
Speaking in his World Pharmacists Day 2026 address, PSN President Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim said the Society's centenary would provide an opportunity to reflect on the development of pharmacy in Nigeria and look towards its future.
PSN's own historical records identify 1927 as the year the Society was founded, linking the birth of PSN to the establishment of the School of Pharmacy at Yaba.
Plans for the centenary
Tanko outlined several activities being considered for the 2027 celebration.
These include a centenary declaration, a centenary endowment fund, a public lecture, a centenary publication, a centenary exhibition, heritage-related activities, a centenary banquet and an awards night.
The proposed programme is intended to combine reflection on the profession's history with activities focused on its future.
The centenary preparations are already taking shape. In March 2026, PSN announced the launch of a Centenary Endowment Fund intended to support pharmacy education and health-based research. The Society also said a proposed Umaru Fintiri Award for Innovation in Pharmacy Practice was expected to debut during the 2027 celebrations.
A century of organised pharmacy
The 2027 milestone will place the development of organised pharmacy in Nigeria under renewed attention, including the evolution of pharmacy education, professional regulation, practice and the pharmaceutical sector.
For PSN, the centenary is therefore expected to serve not only as a celebration of history but also as an opportunity to consider the profession's future role in healthcare.
