Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Kaduna Launches Telepsychiatry Unit for Home-Based Consultations
The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, has commissioned a telepsychiatry unit and launched a digital platform enabling eligible patients to access psychiatric follow-up consultations from home, in a move to reduce travel burdens and improve continuity of mental healthcare.
The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, has commissioned a Telepsychiatry Unit and unveiled a digital platform that will enable eligible patients to access psychiatric follow-up consultations remotely, reducing the need for repeated visits to the hospital.
The initiative, announced on the hospital's official LinkedIn page, is designed to improve access to specialist mental healthcare by allowing patients to consult healthcare professionals through video calls from their homes, particularly those who face difficulties travelling to the facility.
The platform, available at fnphkd.cloud, allows patients to book consultations, make payments and access their medical records through a digital interface. The hospital demonstrated the system during its launch, showing how a patient could connect with the clinical team remotely for a consultation.
The Telepsychiatry Unit was commissioned by the hospital's Medical Director, Prof. Aishatu Yushau Armiya’u, as part of efforts to expand the use of digital technology in mental healthcare delivery.
Remote Consultations to Reduce Barriers to Care
The introduction of telepsychiatry is expected to ease some of the logistical and financial challenges associated with accessing specialist psychiatric services, particularly for patients who live far from the hospital.
Under the current arrangement, the service is available to patients who have already undergone an initial physical assessment at the hospital and require follow-up consultations. This means that the digital platform will complement existing clinical services rather than replace face-to-face psychiatric assessments.
The hospital has also clarified that the platform is not designed for psychiatric emergencies, for which patients require appropriate urgent medical attention.
By enabling eligible patients to receive follow-up care remotely, the initiative could help reduce travel expenses, accommodation costs and time spent attending routine hospital appointments. It may also support continuity of care for patients who have difficulty returning to the hospital regularly.
Digital Platform to Support Patient Management
The hospital's digital platform integrates several functions intended to facilitate remote consultations and patient management, including appointment booking, payment processing and access to medical records.
Patients with a hospital number and internet access can use the platform to access the service, including those living outside Kaduna State.
The hospital's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) representative stated that the platform incorporates multiple layers of security to safeguard patient information. Protecting the confidentiality of psychiatric records is particularly important given the sensitive nature of mental health information.
The hospital also plans to introduce a dedicated mobile application to improve accessibility and expand the ways patients can interact with the service.
Plans to Expand Telepsychiatry Services
As part of its expansion strategy, the hospital plans to onboard 23 Kaduna State Government Centres of Excellence as technical partners to support the wider implementation of telepsychiatry services.
The proposed collaboration could extend the reach of specialist mental healthcare beyond the hospital's physical location and strengthen connections between specialist psychiatric services and other healthcare facilities.
The development also comes amid broader efforts to decentralise mental healthcare in Kaduna State, including the training of healthcare workers in primary healthcare facilities and initiatives to improve access to essential psychotropic medicines.
Integrating digital consultations with existing healthcare facilities could provide additional opportunities for patients to access specialist input while receiving care closer to their communities. However, the effectiveness of such an approach will depend on implementation, reliable internet connectivity, adequate staffing and appropriate referral arrangements.
A New Approach to Psychiatric Care in Nigeria
The commissioning of the Telepsychiatry Unit represents a further step towards incorporating digital health technologies into specialist psychiatric services in Nigeria.
Telepsychiatry can provide an additional means of maintaining contact between patients and healthcare professionals, particularly where distance, transportation costs and other practical barriers affect access to follow-up care. Its implementation, however, requires appropriate clinical assessment, patient consent, secure handling of medical information and clear procedures for identifying and managing emergencies.
For pharmacists, the introduction of remote psychiatric consultations also raises opportunities to strengthen continuity of pharmaceutical care. These may include supporting medication reviews, monitoring treatment adherence, identifying adverse drug reactions and coordinating medicine-related interventions with the wider clinical team, where such services are incorporated into the platform's clinical workflow.
As the hospital expands the service, its impact will depend not only on the number of patients enrolled but also on the quality, safety, accessibility and continuity of care provided.
The initiative positions the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, among Nigerian specialist healthcare institutions adopting digital approaches to service delivery. Its implementation and outcomes could provide useful lessons for other facilities exploring technology-enabled mental healthcare.
